Kerala is home to several traditional dance forms, and Kathakali holds a central spot and stands out among the crowd. Performance art lovers will have a hard time deducing what aspect of Kathakali they have exactly fallen in love with after watching a splendid performance or two. A highly charged powerful drama that combines dance, music, devotion and billowing costumes, Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world.

Kathakali is performed in sanskritised malayalam and typically potrays tales form ancient Hindu scriptures such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The uniqueness of Kathakali lies in the fact that the text of the story is sung for the Kathakali artist who uses it as a baseline for interpretation. He/She then through methodical movements of body muscles, potrays the emotion associated with the sung text. An elaborate make-up code serves in the creation of extraordinary costumes that have become a pivotal factor in drawing interest into Kathakali.

A traditional Kathakali performance begins in the evening and continues throughout the night, culminating at dawn. However, in order to cater to tourist audiences, performances that span only a couple hours are held in auditoriums. We at Tigers Roare' provide our guests with a unique opportunity to enjoy Kathakali at Thekkady.
